Nonlinear optical materials and applications

Nonlinear optical materials are used in many applications such as lasers, optical waveguides, optical signal amplifiers, optical switches and multi-photon microscopes etc. Conventional materials can exhibit nonlinear optical properties only when excited with high power pulsed lasers (light sources), due to their poor nonlinear absorption cross-section. As a disadvantage these light sources are expansive and power consuming for common use. Recently many groups are working on highly nonlinear materials with high nonlinear absorption/cross sections, these materials are able to show nonlinear optical properties even at cw excitations (low power light sources), and these kind of materials can be used in future generation of optical devices. Here I will be discussing on recent developments in nonlinear optical materials.
