Nickel-based single crystal super-alloys are used for gas turbine blades due to their corrosion resistivity and high temperature strength. Operating at temperatures in the range of 1000 °C under varying stresses means they have a limited life time. With a γ/γ’ microstructure, where the gamma prime precipitates are surrounded by the γ phase, there are dislocation interactions at the γ’ interface during high temperature low stress deformation. These interactions contribute to the directional coarsening (rafting) of γ’ cubes. An effort has been made to investigate these interactions between γ’ cubes and interface dislocations in low accumulated creep strain conditions.
